I've done my best to keep General Overachiever free of four letter words thus far, but today's post is far too strong for such cleanliness.* So let's cut to the chase, people. There is no time to waste.
Drop what you are doing. Right now. I mean it.
Now answer this question with total honesty: Do you think that what you're doing with your time is fucking awesome?
If you answered yes, then that rocks! Cheers to you. You may now continue on with your awesome life. If you answered no, however, then stick around for a bit.
Thanks to a link posted by Yes and Yes recently, I came across two articles this week that have set my brain on fire. And since then, I haven't been able to shut up about organization. Inspiration. New experiences. Lists. Know why? Because it's time to cut the crap.
Check out these excerpts from the posts I read this weekend. They basically punched my lazy, facebook-surfing attitude in the mouth. The first is from Julien Smith:
If you’re on the path to something you’re pretty sure you don’t want to be doing, may I suggest you fucking stop immediately? Because you are wasting your life. You will die, no one will care, or even know, about all the suffering you went through. The money you’ve accumulated will go to ungrateful descendants who never suffered and it’ll all have been for nothing. So you have two options. Double down or get the fuck out.
The second is from Charlie Gilkey:
Many of us aren't doing epic shit because we think we're not big enough to do it. Or that it's better to start with something small and that smallness defines our ambition indefinitely. Or that epic shit is stuff that epic people do.
Wrong. Everyday people do epic shit and then become epic. They weren't born that way.
What. A. Wake-up call.
Look, if you're anything like me, you want a life that's, well, awesome. You want to be awesome, right? And if you really want these things, why aren't you striving for them? Why are you wasting time doing anything else? That's just stupid! Stop dragging your feet and feeling inadequate, because insecurity is WORTHLESS. If you want to love your life and yourself, then prove it. Do the things you want to do, because in the end, who cares what other people think? They're going to die, too, just like you. So why worry about their opinions? If your main motive is to win the approval of others, you will never be truly happy.
Dwight Schrute and I share similar mottos. Sub "an un-awesome person" for "an idiot"and you'll get the picture.
If you decide to zero in on what you love doing and cut the extraneous crap out of your life, does this mean that every moment of every day will be filled with lightning bolts and shredding guitar? No.
Will you wake up each morning feeling perfect and in control?
Absolutely not.
Will you have to spend more time setting priorities, making lists and exercising self-discipline? Uh, duh.
But come on, guys. Aren't those extra hours set aside for organization and motivation worth it if they mean more time spent kicking ass?
One time I snuck onto a closed highway bridge for a merchandise photoshoot with a bunch of fellow radio staff members. And then we ran from the cops. It was pretty fucking awesome. |
*I've also been awake since 5 a.m., have fueled up with copious amounts of black coffee and am now blasting heavy metal to commuters all over the tri-state area. There's no stopping the foul language flood.
Amen.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this post. So much so it has inspired me to do the same!:)
ReplyDeleteThough I agree, we won't always wake up ready to kick the world in the face, I think it might be easier to maintain motivation if you are surrounded by people who are also fucking awesome.
ReplyDeleteI'm saying I'm glad we're friends. =)
As am I, GBLady :) Is our phone date ever going to happen?!
ReplyDeleteLiz & Daria -- Glad you share the sentiment. Love you guys.
These really are the best reminders :) Lovely post.
ReplyDeletewoah. that was also a bit of a slap in the face.
ReplyDeletelife is freakin' hard sometimes though, might I just say. I WANT to spend my time doing things that I love - taking photos, being outdoors, writing bits and pieces when the mood strikes, reading books, caring for animals, eating and cooking and sharing food.
and ultimately, I want to be a student of the world. but in order to see the world and take beautiful pictures of the world and eat beautiful foods of the world and learn the languages of all the countries in the world I need to make money.
there's so much fucking awesomeness out there.
I just started following this blog and so far this is my favorite post by far. I shared it with everyone I know.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Jessica
