30 day song challenge: Day 17

A song that holds a lot of meaning for you.

Most songs from the Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five catalog hold a lot of meaning for me, but this one in particular stands out. I'm totally serious, dudes.

It's a song that--for a number of reasons--became centered around the tragic death of a friend several years ago. Consequently, it also became a focal point around which the rest of us banded to get through the dark days.

Bitches ain't shit, you guys.

30 day song challenge: Day 15 & soul coffee

A song people wouldn't expect you to like.

My day-to-day cup of tea? Not exactly. But sometimes a gal just needs some grit and grunge. Thanks, WSOU, for yanking me violently out of my comfort zone.

If you had the attention span to read all the way through my last post, 1) thank you immensely and 2) you already know that I've been in a pretty serious rut of self-doubt lately. In trying to pull myself out, I've taken to reading the words of Alexandra Franzen like scripture. The woman is a powerhouse of positivity, you guys. And though I sometimes read her posts and think WHAT kinda Kool-Aid is this girl drinking?, more often than not just I'm inspired to get off my ass and make something of myself.

If you're not sure who "you" are right now, take a few minutes this week to reflect on the Theme of Your Life. It's centering; it's reassuring; it's a caffeine jolt for the soul.

Here's mine, as per one hour ago:

My cellular obstacles are the desire for instant success, the fear of prematurely cutting off possibilities and the need to control ev.er.y.thing. The biggest, most vital lessons that I'm destined to learn and relearn are patience and the relinquishing of control.

My magnetic talents are human attraction, organization and written word. I put them to use every day by playing matchmaker between new music and its potential fans, managing personal creative projects and writing killer client reports. I hide them whenever I a) get too burnt out to show my face or b) doubt my own potential for independent success. But I'm wildly in love with my ability to rabble-rouse; to get people excited. To make things happen.

My final-breath battle cry is this: Though you cannot control the situation in which you're placed or the actions of those around you, you can control the ways YOU respond and run your life; where, with whom and how you live it.

I believe that the world is bigger than imaginable, and that one of the main points of life is seeing as much of that world as possible in order to unify my views of it with the others who experience it. We're all in this together, and I don't want to die before reminding the world that we are all part of a huge network. NO one is an isolated island, and whatever your passion is, it can be shared with others. There is someone else out there who shares your loves and beliefs.

My life has a theme. And if I had to synthesize it into a single word (or two, or three, or several), it would be: never-ending education. enthusiasm cultivation. action-creating connection. tireless exploration.

30 day song challenge: Day 14 & a VERY long read

A song you like hearing live.

Wowza, that's tough. There are so many things that could fit into this category. BUT. Keeping it simple, I saw this song live last week, and it was the shit. There's no video for it, but that link will give you direct access. Go listen to it. And only read through the rest of this post if you have some serious time to kill.

***

I'm gonna get real honest about some less-than-happy subject matter right now, and not because I'm asking for your pity or because I think my feelings make me a special, unique snowflake. On the contrary, I get the sense that a lot of twentysomethings are dealing with varying degrees of this situation, and when a friend or two or three reminded me that I wasn't alone, I felt less like shit. So if you're feeling like shit, maybe this will help you, too.

There are some days that I wake up and just. hate. myself. My self-confidence stash is at E, and my flaws weigh more heavily on me than the scarves, boots and coats I'll soon have to don in the coming months. And that's not because I wake up feeling like a bad person; it's because I wake up feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and powerless to push my life in the direction I want. I'm a rag doll being dragged through each day, barely keeping up with the pace. And when that happens day after day, week after week, I forget who "me" even is.

Taken straight from an email I just wrote to a very close friend:

"The nights I can come home and work on anything non-job-related are few and far between, and if there's no time to do my own thing, how will I ever grow/eventually move upward? This mentality, plus some serious self-doubt after meeting so many experienced, intelligent and (this is my own term for them) real music industry people has led to a pretty rough past few weeks. I was standing in the middle of a very excited, very sweaty crowd at a release party on Tuesday night when it hit me that I don't even know what music I like. One of my co-workers is always trying to get me to describe what my "sound" is. And I've never been able to give him a straight answer. I can tell him the bands that I once loved because I grew up listening to them, laughable as they are now (picture me as a 12-year-old downloading Guster, Dispatch and, later, every artist from the Garden State soundtrack), and what I'm listening to on a day-to-day basis (a lot of Delicate Steve, some Soul Coughing for nostalgia and a handful of other things), but in reality, I have no fucking clue how to even describe what "my" taste is. And that made me so indescribably sad.

"Suddenly, nothing sounded good to me. No music sounded appealing, none of my favorite foods sounded appealing (there was FREE ICE CREAM being given away at this show), not even a good pumpkin beer sounded appealing."

I'm serious about this, you guys. I worked hard, made amazing connections, graduated from college early and landed my dream job where I get to do a bunch of awesome things, but even so, life isn't all concerts and butterflies.

"I got up the next morning with zero confidence in my ability to do anything but brush my teeth and maybe get dressed. Who had hired me to talk about music, and why? And how could I ever progress from here if the rest of my skills--design, web-building, whatever--are disappointingly subpar from lack of practice/real creativity? I felt destined to forever hold an office job under someone else's watch, to be tied to a desk and to be forever tired, confused, utterly mediocre and tasteless."

But the story gets better! Because here's the important part: This happens to everyone sometimes. And if you are a human being trying to better your life in some way, it will undoubtedly happen to you. No matter what you're doing--trying to pass a class, searching for jobs or just making an effort to survive the one you have--you WILL experience days in which you wake up, look in the mirror and want to do nothing but crawl back into bed. You WILL suffer severe bouts of self-doubt and question your own judgments. It happens.

But it WILL pass, too. You've got, got, got to remember that you're not stupid, you're not unqualified and you're not alone. See the response I received to that email to emphasize this point:

"YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOURSELF FOR KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE GOALS. I know so many people who will NEVER pursue their aspirations because it is easier to get all bummed out and give yourself excuses that kept you from doing so. But you know what? as slow as it may happen, you are working towards those goals right now, and no one's stopping you. That's pretty awesome."

This friend ^^ was right.

Oh, and on where I am at this point? Though I'm still trying to find my footing on what makes me love or hate a band, and I'm still trying to push past mediocrity when it comes to non-work projects, I know I'm out of that awful low phase because my appetite is back. This girl came over last night to catch up, bake a red wine chocolate cake with me and talk about life.

More than half of that cake is gone by now.

30 day song challenge: Day 12

A song that reminds you of your best friend.

I don't think she even reads my blog, but to the girl who endured middle school theater, high school cheerleading and all the highs/lows of life with me.

Let's talk about learning to flirt with boys, learning to drive and eventually learning to be adults together.

9.17.2012

30 day song challenge: Day 11

A song that reminds you of summer.

Since I'm only just now accepting the fact that summer might possibly be ending (sob), let's skip back to songs from last summer. Still dusting the sand out of my purse from this one.

This song screams sleepovers with Gesina, the learning stages of rabbit ownership and plenty of smoothies to soothe the lack of air conditioning.

Miss you, little jerk.

9.14.2012

30 day song challenge: Day 10

A song that makes you cry.

You know, there really is no reason to share a song that makes me cry.
What good does that do?
What excitement does that spread?

I'm officially skipping Day 10 of the song challenge.

A few thoughts that do make me cry, though:

The thought of not being smart enough,
focused enough,
or driven enough
to someday be my own boss.

The thought of stagnation.

The thought of making the effort to strike out on my own
possibly followed by a few repeated attempts
and having to face the fact that I'm not capable of success.

The thought of being too exhausted by daily life to ever do my own thing.

The thought of doing my own thing
whatever that is
and realizing that I'm not actually very good at it.

Thoughts are scary things sometimes.

30 day song challenge: Day 8

A song you liked when you were younger.

This prompt is stupid. Don't most guilty pleasure songs start as songs you liked when you were younger?

Alright, fine:

I felt oh-so risque pumping the volume on this one while I updated my Xanga.

In other news, has anyone else been keeping up with Psy and "Gangnam Style"? He's the first Korean artist to really make K Pop a thing in the States. The Atlantic's article on the song's subtle social commentary is fascinating. It also makes me feel less like a bandwagon jumper for actually enjoying Psy's goofiness and the track's catchiness.

9.10.2012

30 day song challenge: Day 6

A song you can always relate to.

Her need to overcomplicate simple sentiments, her desire to skip most of the story just to get to the dramatic scene, her need to "find some time alone" with this guy; yep. I get it. You're crazy, Fiona, but I get it. This essay dissects "Anything We Want" incredibly well.

9.09.2012

30 day song challenge: Day 5

A song that has new meaning to you every time you hear it.

Between the personal and work-related ties, plus the upbeat sound combined with the heavy lyrics, "Talk a Walk" says something different with every listen.

9.08.2012

30 day song challenge: Day 4

A song that reminds you of something sad.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a gorgeous album that unfortunately pulls me back to a horrible period of 2011. Stress, isolation, confusion, complete mental and physical exhaustion. Gross.

On a positive note, I've officially hit 100 posts! Wowza.
Whatsay we celebrate? Maybe with this cake?
You make it for me and I'll eat it for you.

9.07.2012

30 day song challenge: Day 3

A song that makes you laugh.

Because if Primus doesn't make you laugh, well then, I don't believe you.

Gratitude list 09.07
  1. It's Friday, it's sunny, and Jersey City residents have this to look forward to.
  2. After weeks without communication, I can call up my mom to ask about insurance and we can immediately digress into a conversation about food, sweets and fitness.
  3. My mouth is cavity-free.
  4. Dinner with a friend in Montclair last night brought back a flood of memories, both good and bad. There's something simultaneously nostalgic yet so sad about about being in suburban New Jersey. To turn to the positive side of the situation...
  5. I am so thankful to have found a home here, to really fit. Regardless of how long I eventually stay, I feel that, for the first time since I can remember, I'm where was meant to be.
Love and saltiness.

9.06.2012

30 day song challenge: Day 2

A song that helps you clear your head.

Gratitude list 09.06
  1. So psyched for a date with an adorable girl and a plate of vegan BBQ ribs tonight.
  2. Sometimes, aggravation from an awful day can be cured by baking tomato pie and holding a Futurama mini-marathon.
  3. This artist. This album. This song.
  4. Sometimes, artwork is just too powerful to be limited to canvas. Hopefully this will someday be my skin.
  5. Holy wow, I am in such. a. better. place. than I was a year ago.

9.05.2012

So long, summer

This was the final weekend of summer exploration.

Descriptive words might include:
Cactus tacos
Sand
SoHo
Bubble tea (taro and strawberry green)
Blue moons
Bridges
Ferries
Roller coasters
Coney Island
Drunk

I'm nearly crying at the onset of cool weather.

Thank goodness for pumpkin everything.

And apple-picking.
And legwarmers.
And music.

Oh, so. much. music.

The three strongest feelings you're having about fall right now: GO.
(Mine are enthusiasm, apprehension, nostalgia)
(And possibly Halloween festivities)

8.28.2012

Getaways

Pittsburgh, PA: The Howlers' Coyote Cafe.

Tuscarora State Forest, PA: Illegal camping.

Nowhereland, Millersville and Shartlesville, PA: Spelunking and succumbing to tourist traps.

Pennsylvania sounded like this, played out like this and tasted like this.
Three days of nothing but pure happy.

Gratitude list 08.28

  1. I'm really into friends' music blogs lately.
  2. Seeing the creative endeavors of those around me is incredibly inspiring.
  3. Has anyone seen any productivity improvement with the help of the Pomodoro Technique?
  4. The Doobie Brothers are currently crooning one of my favorite childhood poems from my record player. Thanks, Jerry.
  5. I'm still clinging desperately to summer like a middle-schooler, but consolation lies in all things pumpkin.

Roots

After about four years away from it, I'm pretty sure that no matter where I go, my heart

will always be

back in Kansas.

There's plenty of exploring left to do, and I'm damn happy to keep that up. But all the love and pride goes straight back to my roots.

ICT, I miss you.

Scratching the Travel Bug bites

I took a little trip this weekend.

Pardon the grainy texture--I took this over the sleeping window-seat guy's shoulder.

It was a quick jaunt to the small-but-feisty Athens, GA. The weather was hotter, the drinks were cheaper and the pace, thank deity of choice, was blessedly slower.

Not that derogatory bass-akwards, slow-as-molasses kind of slow. Just a laid back, enjoying-the-moment variety.

(L) Touring one of my Athens-based stations; (R) Sporting their swag back in the office

This was my first solo work trip (thanks, upper management!)--proposed, planned and executed by moi (except for the post-trip drink companion). And for so many reasons, it was a weekend full of awesome. Faces were put to names that I normally only see via email. Those typically known as "competitors" confirmed their true nature as compadres. All kinds of new friends were made.

There was music (so much music) and kickball and dancing and food (so much food) and plenty of general debauchery.

Photo Cred: Twin Hearts Photography

It was so. hard. to go back to work this morning. If I wasn't as crazy about my job and the fellow weirdos that sit in the back office with me, I probably would have just skipped the return flight. Because as much as I love Jersey City (read: a lot) and the excitement that this area has to offer...

I know that this is not my final destination.
And that I'm just storing my belongings in hotel drawers while my suitcase takes a breather.

"Not me" moments

File under "Shit I Don't Normally Do":

Then file under "Reasons It Was Worth It":
  • Ha Ha Tonka, Cory Chisel and Murder By Death all killed it. The rock-out was continuous for three solid hours (thanks, great music + tequila-spiked coffee).
  • Glutinous rice flour looks hilarious before it's molded into mochi. Imagine microwaving The Blob, then smothering it in flour.
  • My reading nook looks so fucking cool. All I want to do upon coming home is lie on the floor and bask in this birdcage light.
  • The new dress rocks. It's comfortable, it matches my shoes, it makes me feel saucy.

Sometimes it's nice to shake things up a little.

Give me two things you're doing this week that aren't the typical "you." And hey--let me know how it works out, would ya?

What happened, pt. II

Confused about what happened to begin with? This should help. For those who already know what's up, onward ho!

***

When I'd said I was recognized for what I'd been doing at WSOU, I didn't quite get to the important part: I was fucking floored. As the host (in a line of many great previous ones) of a weekly 3-hour indie show on what is primarily a metal only college station, I really didn't imagine I had any more than approximately seven listeners. Apparently, though, someone really was tuning in. I remember standing at the podium, accepting a giant neon green poster, babbling (nearly blubbering) with shock, telling a roomful of colleagues and potential employers to call in that coming Sunday night, where I'd be taking all their requests and nursing a hangover.

#ForeverClassy #HashtagsInBlogPosts

The weekend as a whole was a blur--a chilly, crowded, tipsy, sleep-deprived, music-filled, incredible blur--and to relive every detail would be overkill. What I will say, though, is that I met dozens of cool people from across the continent, exchanged cards like a magician and eventually sent my resume, as per outside suggestion, to my very favorite music marketing company.

Who actually did call me back.

Gratitude list 07.18
  1. My department will be promoting the new record from one of my first-loved bands; we just found out on Monday. Is it super-hip and trendy to love these guys? Eeeeh. Am I crazy about them anyway and so full of respect for their philanthropic movements? Absolutely.
  2. Air conditioning is the bomb.
  3. The guy at the farmers' market gave me a free sample of spicy mango. Holy shit, you guys.
  4. Pugly Pixel is THE greatest resource when it comes to Photoshop freebies and quick CSS tutorials. Plus, Katrina is just adorable.
  5. I received a surprise package in the mail this week: someone sent me an Intro to Guitar book! I'll soon be able to make La Calabacita sing (after her tuners are replaced).

7.16.2012

Some sky shots

Forecast's calling for thunderstorms throughout the week.
But whatevs, you guys.

Summer weather has been fantastic so far.

7.14.2012

Gratitude list 07.14

1. It feels incredibly refreshing to jump back into Photoshop and baby CSS editing once again. Hey, new header! Nice to see you, photo templates. Haven't done this in a while.
2. As a compulsive project starter, I can easily get wrapped up in the creation of something new (I've spent four hours doing back-end work on this blog, for example). It's incredibly helpful having someone who knows when to say "Dude, slow down or you're going to crash."
3. This book is fascinating.
4. Late-night dumplings and dollar beers in the park are the best medicine for curing a stressful day.
5. This week featured Round II of a recently-begun series of stoop hangs. Plenty of wine, gossip and ambition-sharing to be had.
