Monster Monday & An Explanation

So I may or may not have mysteriously disappeared last week. My bad.

I would make the excuse that I was crazy busy, but let's get real. Everyone is crazy busy. So that option's out.

The least I can do is explain where I went.

First, I went to the CMJ Music Marathon. Took some photos. Won an award. And while I was there, I ate/drank/networked/generally caroused the streets of New York way more than is advisable in such a short timespan. But it was worth every chilly late-night minute, every chaotic venue hunt and even the ridiculous full-body exhaustion ache that hung around on Sunday.

I also made dragon wings out of cardboard and hung out with a troupe of pop culture zombies.

Now I'm thinking it sure would be lame to ask you to keep reading without trying to make this absence up to you. And in saying that...how would you feel about a giveaway? Interested? Eh?

If so, give me a shout in the comments. There may be one underway soon. And it'll make you almost as happy as a kitten holding a bunny.

Up later this week: turning 22, reflections on art modeling and links that'll have your toes tapping.

Monster Monday & A Guest Post

So I'm still mad at the little guy for what he did last week, but come on.

If this isn't cute, I don't know what is.

Passing the reins over to the lovely miss Laurie today. After she graciously featured me in her interview series last week, she then put together this guest post, all while completing midterms and personal projects galore. The girl is a champion.

Read on, friends!

***

Hello! This is Laurie S. from Flight of the TumblebeeClaire has graciously allowed me a small amount of air time upon her lovely blog. Thus, I will take some time to introduce myself to her equally lovely readers and tell you all a bit about what I do. Flight of the Tumblebee was initially started as a blog to keep a record of my creative output and to keep in touch with my family while I was abroad in Ireland. Mainly, I penned vaguely humorous records of my European adventures. Such shenanigans involved (among other things) delicious scones with clotted cream, a decided lack of postal codes, and my virginal consumption of haggis. However, during my stint on the Emerald Isle, I stumbled upon something possibly even more magnificent than a fresh-baked scone: my long-lost pal, drawing.

I've drawn my whole life—ever since I could hold a writing implement, in fact. As a child, I filled notebooks to the brim with stories in pictures. Throughout elementary school, I defaced textbooks with doodles and whiled away boring lectures sketching in the margins on my notes. High school was spent either hunched over a sketchbook in math class, dashing off dry-erase doodles in French class, or brandishing a paintbrush in art class. In college, I took a few art classes.

Then, in my twenty-third year, I inexplicably stopped.

For the first time in my life, I stopped systematically creating. I had other things going on, and art suddenly seemed superfluous. Life went by like lightning. One minute, I worked a minimum wage job at a coffee shop. The next, I was in France teaching English. Moments later, I started graduate school. Bits of chalk, pencils and pens only produced fleeting, hopeful sparks of creative energy. Sketchbooks given to me as gifts sat dormant in the corner, blank and unused.

But, this past year, going to Ireland for the summer energized me in a way that nothing else could. One day, I grabbed a box of Crayola markers for five Euros and managed to fill a 40 page sketchbook in the month of July. Then, after a brief period of vacillation, I convinced myself (finally) to buy a Wacom tablet so I could learn the wily ways of digital art. After that, I drew everyday. It seemed the more I created, the easier being creative became. Ideas for images, stories, and comics came faster than my hands could move! I wondered to myself, “Where were all these ideas a year ago?!”

That's when I started asking questions about Creativity (with a capital “C”).

These days, my blog is transforming into a resource about the nature of Creativity and how to go about achieving a state of “flow.” I find the subject absolutely fascinating. After studying Creativity for thousands of years, humanity has yet to come up with definitive answers about its nature. This beast is more elusive than Nessie or Bigfoot ever thought about being. What is Creativity? What is Creative Thinking? How does it work? How does one get better at being a Creative Person? Is measurably improving one's Creativity even possible?

I would argue that, yes, improvement is possible! And, given the right tools, improvement is quite probable. The problem? Easily accessible resources for learning how to hone one's creative skill set are scarce indeed for the average adult. Yet, that's exactly what I hope to build in my tiny corner of the blogosphere. Through writing articles about my forays into the realm of Creativity research, I hope to provide my audience with access to techniques for improving creative thought and action. Whether gifted in artistry, music, design, mathematics, engineering, or the sciences, anyone and everyone can benefit from a sharper creative toolkit. And, I hope to help sharpen yours.

Not-Monster Monday

"It's just a thing. And we're not our things."

This was unRonic's quote of the evening, his much, much-needed reminder to me after the loss of one of the few material possessions I truly cherish.

My bright green, noise-cancelling, super-awesome, old-school monitor stereo headphones.

I've had them for three years and it's been a relationship of pure, unadulterated love. I mean, just look at those curves. Beautiful.

They've kept me company on innumerable plane, train and subway rides. They've joined me every step of the way as I've moved up the radio ranks from Assistant Producer to Newscaster to DJ. They've served as conversation starters. De-stressers. Just a pair of good old friends.

And now, thanks to the sharp teeth and never-ending curiosity of this guy, they have met their demise. Their cord is now in not one, but four pieces.

I've never been so angry at an animal.
But unRonic had a point--losing something I so highly valued is an excellent, if unwanted, lesson in my journey toward minimalism.

No Monster photo today, the little bastard. Instead hop on over to Flight of the Tumblebee for a discussion on creativity with yours truly. I was super-flattered to be featured in Laurie's interview series, as her posts are a fantastic source of inspiration and brain food. Let's show the girl some love, shall we?

Monster Monday & A Mini Recap

My friends, it really is fall.

And I'm perfectly okay with that.

Especially because "fall" sometimes throws 80-degree curve balls.
What? I can have my pumpkin pie and eat it too, right?

In other news, I saw Chocolate Bread this weekend, drank a lotta whiskey and may have OD'd on pancakes. It. was. awesome.

Upcoming intention of the week:
Actually give my beloved camera a little attention.

What's something you'd like to accomplish during these next few days? Something just for yourself. Just to get your happy juices flowing.

Just to make you hop with excitement.

Monster Monday & Sponsor Shoutout

Pretty sure Monster is going through rabbit puberty. He runs frantically around the house like a crazed teenager and acts just as angsty as one whenever it’s time to go to the pen.

Lies. Look how zen I am.

I’d never planned on raising something resembling a child so soon.

If you haven’t noticed from the rain, chill in the air or sudden barrage of pumpkin flavored beverages on every coffeehouse menu (fucking yum), we’ve reached October—my faaaave month of the year. And to go along with what are arguably the coolest four weeks on the calendar (apple picking. Killer boots. Cozy sweaters. That mysterious smoky scent in the air. HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES) is a quick shoutout to the new month’s sponsors.

You may recognize a handful of familiar buttons over on the side bar, but a few new ones have joined the ranks as well. Please pop on over to see Annika & Nick at A Sweet Release or read up on the latest issue of Cannoli Pie Magazine (co-edited by unRonic and yours truly).

The other members of the lineup, if you haven’t paid them a visit, are also full of inspiration on travel,  photography and getting through the tough stuff. Check ‘em out.

Monster Monday & A Call for Help

Monster survived his first crazy party this weekend. Cheap drinks, loud music, extremely confusing card games, he was there for it all.

And I think he was the only guest who made it into Sunday sans hangover.

Why were there so many cans in this big white box?

***

So, friends, I have a favor to ask. It’s this little guy’s birthday next month, and I’m putting together a present for him.

And what’s more fun at any age than music or art? Music AND art, of course! I’m making him an alphabet-themed coloring book, with one musical group representing each letter. Such as…

I: Iron & Wine

and S: The Shins

But in doing so, I’ve stumbled upon a few roadblocks, namely the letters Q, U and Z. I can’t think of any worthwhile bands that begin with these! So I ask, dear friends, for your suggestions. What musical greatness do I have yet to discover that will fulfill alphabetical requirements and simultaneously provide artwork appropriate for a pre-school-aged child?

Ay ay ay. Ayudarme, por favor!

Monster Monday & Meeting a Friend

This weekend I shared dumplings, cappuccinos and great conversation with a very dear friend. It was our first real-life meet-up.

I think our respective loved ones may have been a bit skeptical of this "internet date." But what a much-needed night of fun it was.

Stumbling spontaneously into New York's San Gennaro Festival and catching a hand-rolled cigar display. Befriending the creepy roast ducks in Chinatown and being impressed by a squad of Firefighters Dragon Fighters. Sampling pastries and frothy cappuccinos in a gorgeous Little Italy cafe.

Also, struggling to take a decent photo.

Halley, New York loved you.

What did you do this weekend, friends?

PS -- My molting Monster (did you know rabbits molt?) is growing a mohawk. Badass has never looked so cute.

Monster Monday & Three Tricks for Maintaining the Awesome

I won’t stand long on my soapbox today, friends. You and I both know that we want our lives to be awesome. That we want to be awesome. Because, duh, who doesn’t?

But sometimes, being awesome is hard.
It takes motivation. It takes ambition.
It takes a helluva lot more energy than I have 80% of the time. And the 20% of the time that I do have the energy, it’s usually caffeine-induced (we all have our faults, right?)

And because being awesome takes so much energy, it’s annoyingly easy to lose steam and fall back into stagnancy. Hey, being a mossy old rock takes zero effort! Cool!

I’m currently in the middle of my own totally awesome project, which is taking months to prepare for. And with the span of several months looming ahead of me before any of the action happens, I have to keep myself motivated little by little. I have to trick myself into excitement, to feign The Awesome in the interim, and by doing so, create it every day.

Here are the Awesome Maintenance steps that work best for me:

1. Lock yourself into The Awesome right from the start.
I'm not beginning my journey for another four-ish months, but to keep myself motivated, I dropped a big money bomb early on. Now I feel invested. I've gotta keep working, because the plane ticket is real. It's in my name. I've purchased the airline meal and checked the "vegetarian" option. There's no turning back.

2. Get the lowdown from other people who are being awesome.
To remind myself that this leap isn't completely insane, I'm getting some feedback from people who've done it before. I exchange emails with students who have volunteered with the same organization in the past. I'm reading Sideways on a Scooter. I'm trying to visualize their experiences someday matching up with a few of my own.

3. Plan out tiny little tasks that help build up The Awesome over time.
After booking the ticket (and doing a lot of heavy breathing), I sat down and made myself a big ol' list. The "Here's Everything You Need to Do to Prepare" list. And then I took all those listed tasks and stuck one into each week of my planner. The trip may be far away, but it still feels very much like a part of daily life.

These are the tricks that keep me moving. These are how I’m getting by, day by day, until that crazy January 18th flight. They keep the project alive, rather than letting it nap in the shadow of my laziness.

How do you maintain The Awesome?

Oh, and PS -- the brooms made a new friend this week.

Got a Monster in my closet.

Monster Monday & Sponsor Shoutout

With the arrival of September come rediscovered sweaters, revamped comfort food recipes and, best of all, new sponsor swaps!

I’m thrilled to introduce three very talented bloggers this month: Halley from Life of Something New, Rachell from No Mark at All and Tara from Deer in a Bottle. A frequenter of all three blogs myself, I couldn’t help but share snippets of a few past posts that I found especially worthwhile. Feel free to show some love and pay these ladies a visit--click each image to see the full post!

Halley, on secrets to true happiness:

Oh, and PS—is any Monday post complete without a shot of these furry feet?

Monster Monday & a Staten Island Sunset

In national news, Hurricane Irene hung out on the East Coast this weekend. She threw a big fit and caused some floods. A few downed trees. You know.

In personal news, the little Jersey suburb in which I reside was barely grazed. Our preparations included flashlights, bottled water and dry goods beer, popcorn and wine. Several of my friends have been left without power, faced with the choice to remain in trapped their homes or brave the rapids flowing past their front doors; this humble abode, however, survived entirely unscathed.

Brighter weekend highlights included a visit to New York's most under-appreciated borough for a reunion with a rabbit and a writer. The sunsets are gorgeous without all those skyscrapers in the way.

This has been a weekend of savoring the sweet little moments. An ice cream cone on the boardwalk. A cup of tea with friends around a worn kitchen table. A hand-illustrated card from home.

And of course, a bunch of quality time with this guy.

Monster Monday & The Things that Matter

Happy Monday, friends. It's been a helluva weekend.

Events of the past few days have included visits to Oklahoma art galleries, joyfully tearful reunions with family members over White Chocolate & Caramel Pot de Creme, drunken environmental rants with friends, the sudden death of a loved one, a visit from cross-country travelers, all-night stargazing with "sisters" and the made-up vocabulary of a toddler.

My sincere apologies for the hurried posts as of late. There's just so much life to live that I've had trouble setting aside quality time with my laptop.

Please, tell me about you. Any good adventures from the weekend worth sharing? I have so many thoughts these days, but so few words. I have become a sponge, soaking up everything around me in attempt to absorb it all.

Stories to come soon.

Until then, I'll continue darting about without rest.

No time for photos, I'm busy exploring!

Monster Monday & A Mark Twain Announcement

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” —Mark Twain, 1857

Being in total agreement with the wise (and often wonderfully irreverent) Mr. Twain, I've been planning to do a little prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness slaying of my own. I took the biggest step yesterday by booking this:

And am now doing nothing but trying to breathe, breathe, breathe. The levels of excitement, nerves, joy and terror are overwhelming.

After completing undergrad in December, I'll be running around Rishikesh, Dehradun and a few other cities in north India, teaching English and computer skills to middle schoolers (I'm sure they'll teach me a thing or two, as well), exploring the Himalayas and maybe even leaving some footprints in Nepal.

Is this my life?

The best part is that yes, it really is. And it is awesome.

Updates--and more importantly, loads of questions--to come as the date approaches. Right now, just going to keep breathing.

PS: I hear that unRonic has trained this little critter to actually tolerate being picked up and cuddled. Can't wait to test out the new trick in a few weeks.

Excuse me, I'm trying to bathe back here.

Monster Monday & Four Reasons to See Colorado

Two and a half weeks until my reunion with this little pig. Er, rabbit.

Must. Eat. All the pellets. In. The Cup.

I just returned to Wichita from a week spent exploring Buena Vista, Leadville and Salida, Colorado. In other words, I went from 75 degrees at 8,000 feet to 110 degress at 1,000 feet. Can't. Breathe.

Reasons I plan to eventually return (semi-permanently, perhaps?):

1. The natural scenery.

We went a little succulent-crazy at the farmers' market.

2. The creativity.

Ski fence in Leadville.

3. The history.

My future fixer-upper home and future pet deer.

4. The consignment shops.

This is my dad with our purchases from a Leadville thrift store (check out the recycled bags they gave us!) and our celebratory $1 beers. Yeah. $1.

You may laugh at that last point, but I was blown away by how down-to-earth secondhand shopping was. Experience has taught me that buying something "vintage" means paying more, not less, than the item originally cost.

Yes, New York. I'm looking at you.

Maybe this time next year the Southwest Conservation Corps will need a few new members. If so, hellooo long-term camping.

What vacation spot rejuvenates your soul?

Monster Monday & Home Happenings

Still miss this little guy. I hear he's having a good time tearing up Staten Island, though.

Oh hai. Just chillin' in yo bafroom.

Since landing in Wichita last week, here are some things I've had no time for:
- Anything involving a computer
- Sleep
- Personal space
- Skydiving (though I never had time for this to begin with)

Here are a few of the things I have had time for:

Catching up with dear friends over the world's best donuts and coffee.

Celebrating a wedding with lovely family members.

Er, loving and lovely family members.

Drinking Midwest beer. I have yet to find a drink so tasty in any other region.

Putting vegetarianism on hold for the sake of sampling a new restaurant (hard to pass up free cheeseburger or thai shrimp pizza).

Savoring every minute.

Off to Colorado tomorrow. What are you up to these days?

7.25.2011

Monster Monday

Monster is on vacation this month. In a central-air apartment. unRonic is looking after him while I spend some time running around the Midwest.

I think they're both pretty stoked, but I miss my lunch date.

What are you up to this week?

7.18.2011

Monster Monday & Scaling Back

Metaphoric life lesson: no matter how hard you try to keep your space neat and organized, someone will come along and make a mess of it all over again.

You just deal with it and keep cleaning anyway.

Thanks for the pellets, but I'm kinda busy eating the dust pile you just swept up.

I have an announcement to make. This Saturday will mark the month-iversary of General Overachiever. That's four weeks' worth of daily posts. Wow! Cheers, friends! As I recently confessed to Halley over at Life of Something New, I have fallen in love with the blogging process and all that it entails. The people I've met, the posts I've read and the conversations I've shared with writers, photographers, chefs, book critics, designers, travelers and friends around the globe have all been incredibly inspiring. What an encouraging community to be a part of. It truly is awesome.

With the end of the first month, however, comes the beginning of a new posting schedule. Starting next Monday, I'll only be publishing new material three times a week. The reasons for this are fourfold:
  1. I'll soon be spending some much-needed time at home, meaning my main focus will be on catching up with family and a few dear friends.
  2. My final college semester will begin shortly after that, as well as the switch to a new job, apartment and general way of life. In short, I gon' be busy.
  3. It would be a tragedy to start churning out boring material just for the sake of daily posts.
  4. You as a reader probably have better things to do with your time, anyway. If not, try getting out more often.

Sister and mom: just two of many people I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE. If I'd included photos of everyone on the list, this post woud be two pages long.

Also, thank goodness my hair has grown out since these were taken.

My original plan was to continue with Monster Monday, Tuesday Tunes and Thursday: Things that Rock. I'd shorten the amount of time spent on the daily theme to about a paragraph, then follow it with an unrelated topic, as seen in any of the links listed above. But then I thought, "Hey, Claire, why don't you discuss this with the people who actually read your ramblings?"

So...that's what I'm doing.

If you read this blog (bless you, you saintly person), what posts do you like to see? What genuinely makes you want to stick around, and what bores you? Brutal honesty is always appreciated. Because blogging is not about keeping a personal journal. It's about engaging in conversation. What are your thoughts?

7.11.2011

Monster Monday & Weekend Inspirations

Three hilarious reasons to own a rabbit:
  1. He will yawn. And then you will get to see all four of his funny-looking teeth.
  2. He will try very hard to share your peach smoothie with you.
  3. He will mark your possessions as his territory by rubbing his chin all over them (apparently rabbits possess a scent gland under their chins that humans cannot detect).
This is my laptop now. And my blog. That bike in the corner is mine, too.

Moving on.

I've been trying to take more cues from the elements around me these days. To be mindful. To be open to inspiration. To be, well...a sponge.

This effort sprang from the similar endeavor of a close friend, a driven and intelligent individual who possesses a beautiful sense of self-worth (I wish more twentysomethings  realized the value of this last trait). Anyway, she's also the one who shared her strawberry jam with me, and in  a roundabout chain of events, she claims that her inspiration for  this culinary venture was actually my entry question for last week's Music Giveaway

Whew, that was a lot of explanation. Bottom line: she's now on a mission to try something new each week--a brilliant idea. So, in a similar vein, my own goal is to keep track of one or two new things I try on a weekly basis. The record of all those experiences--be they written, visual, whathaveyou--will be a constantly changing pool of inspiration to pull from when I'm stuck in a project rut.

Thanks is due in part to Laurie Safari for her thoughts on keeping track.

New Experiences from this Weekend:

Jamaican fruit juice and soda with unRonic.

Breadfruit. WOW. More, please!

Maplewoodstock.

Hoboken's Waterfront.

Best view of the Manhattan skyline I've ever seen.

6 ice cubes + 1 peach + 2 tsp Stevia + splash o' milk = simple smoothie perfection.
With a little cinnamon and cardamom thrown in for good measure.

What did you do this weekend?
